Discovery number one: comfy chairs are really dangerous. I was reading, doing my best to focus, when I realized that I was nodding off. I jerked awake, blinked back sleepiness, and read some more.
This was repeated a couple more times before I decided to squeeze in a really fast nap. I gathered my things and started the walk back to the dorm.
Discovery number two: it's hard to sleep while walking. By the time I made it back to my dorm, I was awake enough to decide that I didn't really need a nap. So I sat at my desk and did some more reading until supper time.
Discovery number three: tea has some caffeine, and it tastes really really good. (Okay, so I knew this before college. But still!) After a Wednesday night service I attended with my roommate and one of my suitemates, I returned to my dorm to finish my reading and review some notes. I made some Earl Grey, changed into my sophisticated, purple, coffee-cup pajama bottoms, and buckled down again. The tea banished that sleepy feeling around your eyes that you get when you're tired, and I stayed alert enough to finish my work for the night.
"Awesome is God in His sanctuary,
the God of Israel;
He gives power and strength to His people.
Blessed be God!" ~Psalm 68:35 (NRSV)
