I'm attending the church here on campus. The first Sunday, the church put on a free lunch for the students. I went with my suitemates, and we had a wonderful time eating and talking. The church asked that we fill out little information cards, and there was a spot at the bottom to write down how we'd like to get involved.
Back home, my sister and I volunteer in our church nursery regularly, and we taught a Sunday School class. (She's handling the class all by herself now, and I'm super-proud of how she's continuing to be a light to those kids.) I really liked teaching the kids and playing with them and getting to see them grow and mature. So I wrote down on the card that I'd like to get involved in the nursery or maybe a Sunday School class.
Some emails went around, and one day I received a message asking about when we could set up an interview. I thought that was rather odd. But, you know, I was someone unknown, and maybe they just wanted to get to know what sort of person I am. No big deal.
That evening at supper, I heard from three different girls that it was a real job. As in, you-get-a-paycheck-for-doing-this job.
I was completely surprised by this news. I didn't know that nursery help was a paid position. I had assumed that it was volunteer work. How could I take money for playing with adorable toddlers?
I'm a college student. I am so not arguing about getting paid.
The interview went very well, and I got all the official paperwork out of the way the following day. (This was all last week.) Then, this past Tuesday, I got an email asking if I could start Wednesday evening. I replied with a very excited "Yes!"
One full shift in, and I still can't believe that God has blessed me with this "job". I thoroughly enjoyed watching the kids for a couple of hours. We played with Lincoln Logs and Legos. The kids learned the story of the Good Samaritan. At one point, we sat them down with Goldfish and VeggieTales (and in that moment, I felt so very official).
So yeah. I have a job that I didn't really intend to get. Isn't it amazing how God works? I'm excited to see what He does with this opportunity :D
O, Katie, that is wonderful! And how God works does sometimes surprise us! But I am happy for you. Blessings.
